Hinlopenstretet's vegetationBy Øystein OverreinThe flora along the coast of Hinlopenstretet and on the islands in the sound between Sorgfjorden and Vibebukta has not been mapped in detail. A rough categorization of Svalbard’s vegetation places Hinlopenstretet’s richest vegetation within the northern Arctic tundra zone. South of Sorgfjorden, around Lomfjorden, around Murchisonfjorden and the middle and inner parts of Wahlenbergfjorden moist tundra characterized by Arctic wood-rush (Luzula nivalis) can be found. The remaining areas of vegetation on both sides of the fjord belong to the Arctic polar desert zone. The type of vegetation found here is a polar desert community dominated by Svalbard poppy (Papaver dahlianum). Updated April 2009 |
