After studying the satellite images and the weather forecasts with the pilot and the meteorologist for the past two days, we think we have found a favourable opening in the weather. But in Antarctica the only thing you can be sure of is that everything can change at a moment’s notice. Did you know that written Norwegian has two different words for the South Pole?
The two words – Sørpolen and Sydpolen – both mean the same thing, but have slightly different connotations. Back at the time of Roald Amundsen, the southernmost point of the globe was usually called Sydpolen. Today it is usually referred to as Sørpolen. Languages are not static, but change over time. |
