The Fram Museum celebrates its 75 th birthday in 2011

In connection with Fridtjof Nansen’s 150th birthday and the 100th anniversary of Roald Amundsen’s attainment of the South Pole in 2011, the Fram Museum will organize a series of projects to commemorate these important events. At the same time the museum is undergoing a comprehensive modernization to offer the visitors new permanent exhibitions and better facilities. 

 Modernization

The entrance, the reception desk and the museum store will be brand new. Wider stairs and elevators are being built.

Publication of diaries in both Norwegian and English

  • The crew member’s diaries from the South Pole Expedition ( The diaries of Hjalmar Johansen, Olav Bjaaland, Oscar Wisting, Sverre Hassel, Thorvald Nilsen, Jørgen Stubberud and Ludvik Hansen).
  • Publication of all the crew member's diaries from the First Fram Expedition.
  • Publication of all of Fridtjof Nansen's diaries.

Contribution to other exhibitions

  • Contribution to the exhibition “Race to the End of the Earth” at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. The exhibition includes the stories of both the Norwegian and British expeditions to the South Pole in 1910-12.
  • Contribution to a Roald Amundsen exhibition at the Scott Polar Research Institute i Cambridge.
  • Cooperation with the University of Oslo on the exhibition “North - Science at the End of the World”, with focus on Fridtjof Nansen’s scientific work.

A lecture series on Fridtjof Nansen’s life and work

  • Starting in March and continuing through the year.

New permanent exhibitions

  •  Exhibitions on Fridtjof Nansen (October 10, 2011) and the First Fram Expedition. 
  •  Exhibition on the South Pole expedition (December 14, 2011).

Promotion of the Fram Museum’s touring exhibitions

  • «Fridtjof Nansen – the humanitarian» 
  • «Cold Recall – Roald Amundsen's lectures and photos from the Northwest Passage and the South Pole».  

Cooperation with the Norwegian Refugee Council and UNHCR on the Nansen Refugee Award
